Ball, Middle English 'balle', 'land by a boundary mound'
National Trust, 1984, Knightshayes Court, Devon, 8 (Report - Survey). SDV341846.
The field names 'Ball' (4707) and 'Backer Ball' (4709) reveal that in antiquity a ball, i.e. a barrow marked a field boundary in 4707, while 4709 was to the 'back 'o the ball'. These fields currently lie under woodland and no barrow was visible on a brief site visit.
