Full description

Department of Environment, 1972, Honiton, 6 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV337401.

St. Leonards, Exeter Road. 19th century, 2 storey classical front, 3 sash windows, with glazing bars, at 1st floor. Balustraded parapet. Plaster architraves and consoles to 1st floor windows. Ground floor splay bay sash windows with greek key pattern to frieze of entablature. Recessed central entrance with panelled reveals to case.

The western end of the conservation area is characterised by groups of mainly early and mid 19th century villas in landscaped gardens, with some chert stone boundary walls. The houses range from expressive Gothic cottage to fomal two-bay classical types. The photograph shows two large stucco mid 19th century villas (St Leonards and adjacent Burwood) in a quite formal landscaped setting, mainly evergreens. Maps, photograph.
