Full description
M. Smee, 1981, Yew Tree House (Correspondence). SDV366975.
The house is built of cob on rubble footings which rise to the height of the ground floor window cills. There are four cruck trusses in the roof. They have been much modified and show evidence of earlier purlins. All the roof timbers are smoke blackened. The present roof was rebuilt over the trusses and purlins.
The ground floor plan comprised an upper room, which was once a post office, and a larger lower room with a large fireplace at the lower end. There is no evidence of a cross passage. The stairs to the upper floor are in a small lobby alongside the fireplace. At the lower end of the house, reached by doorways from the lobby are a dairy and back kitchen. The floor of the back kitchen was of cobbled flints. The dairy formerly had a rough cement screed over an earth floor which contained rotted straw, animal bonds, broken pipe stems and pottery sherds.

Yew Tree House. Circa C16. Stone rubble and rendered cob. New tile roof with gabled and half-hipped ends. Two storeys. Three window range. C20 three-light casements with glazing bars. To right plank door with wooden lattice porch. Rebuilt brick end and ridge chimney stacks. Interior: jointed cruck trusses with smoke-blackening. Open fireplace with cambered bressummer.
