Parallel earthwork banks, circa 7m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1983, at Lang’s Copse, Ogwell. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the east facing slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.55 hectares. The earthworks correspond with land parcel 53 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Lower Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment, with land parcel 52 to the immediate northeast recorded as Lang’s Orchard. The First Edition Ordnance Survey map shows an orchard is still present within land parcel 53, although has been cleared within land parcel 52. The earthworks are interpreted possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks for an orchard, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard within land parcel 53 has been partly cleared of fruit trees by 1946 and completely cleared by 1983. The southern extent of this former orchard has been developed for residential housing by 1999-2000 and the earthworks levelled, although the survival of the earthworks within the northern extent is unknown.
