"the maria".50 ton sloop.31ft long, 16ft beam, 9ft in the hold. Refitted as a "submarine" in 1774. This involved construction of a wooden chamber, measuring 9 by 12 by 8ft, in the hull, recaulking and overall sheathing. Submerged off firestone bay, due n of drake's island, in june 1774, with 50 tons of concrete ballast. Minutes later a violent ebullition of air was observed. Vessel located in 22 fathoms and lifted in august. Moved 300ft nearer drake's island before slipping from her cradle. Relocated october, but abandoned owing to bad weather (larn).
