Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, Untitled Source (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV24.

Vis=2/10/1953 (os) mesolithic waste flakes found in soft cliff face. The cliff is subject to constant erosion, and flints are constantly being extracted.

E.G. BONES, SHELLS, POTS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV71336.

Flint scatter. The flints were found about 12-15" below the present ground level of the raised beach between croyde and baggy point. It is therefore necessary to look just below the cliff edge, or where footpaths have cut down to the required level. One or two can be found lying on the lower cliff slopes or paths, where they have been washed down. Flint does not occur here naturally, and the recorder has never found a flint pebble at the present sea level here, nor any flint pebbles higher up. The whole length of the cliff has not been searched because of the difficulty in climbing some parts, but the flints seem to be concentrated within 100m either side of the small stream beside the gate marking the entrance to the national trust land. Nothing else has been found with them (e. G. Bones, shells, pots). Those found embedded in the undisturbed cliff face are always horizontal and therefore difficult to see, but this does suggest that they are in the original place where they were dropped.
