A South Devon man has discovered evidence of an early canal alongside the River Dart which may have once carried coal, agricultural; produce, slate and stone between Buckfast and Totnes.
Early records show a plan for a navigable canal from Ashburton to Totnes close to the east bank of the River Dart was drawn up in 1792. Recent research shows the scheme was reconsidered in 1809. All that remains of the canal now is strange ditch-like features. Three public houses at Totnes, Buckfastleigh and Bow Bridge called the Watermans Arms further evidence possible canal activity.
