Summary

Single storey, open-fronted cattle shelter with a corrugated asbestos roof. Part of the gable walls appear to have been rebuilt in stone, probably replacing the original cob. The building is not shown on the Tithe Map of circa 1840 and appears, therefore, to have been built in the second half of the 19th century.

Linhay 23. 3 metres high by 5 metres wide by 7.2 metres long. Open-fronted, no pound. Condition good. Annotated survey drawing shows an single storey, open-fronted building with a gable-ended corrugated asbestos roof with blue clay ridge tiles. The gable ends of the building appear to have been rebuilt in stone, probably replacing cob.

The Marsh linhays are intrinsically associated with the traditional cattle farming of the area, and their construction is believed to have started almost immediately after the initial enclosure was completed. Almost all linhays appear to have been built by the time of the 1842 tithe map of Braunton Parish. Linhays are 2 storey, open-sided cattle shelters, with a talet which was used to store feed. This study has produced a photographic inventory of the current condition of the Marsh linhays, together with any known sites of linhays which have now been lost forever.
