Origins of raw material discussed (schofield + webster).

Probable mesolithic flints from "tillage" field. A considerable number of flints and quartzite tools and flakes have been found in brickyard, tillage and st. Helens fields. Tentatively attributed to the mesolithic (nt).

Primary waste flint flakes found in test pits in 1988. Also a hollow scraper of mesolithic or early neolithic date (schofield 1988).

Langham collection contains 124 flints from tillage field. Mostly primary waste, but also core trimming flakes, bashed lumps and a number of broken flakes. Source probably pebbles from quarry beach (schofield 1991).

Considerable numbers of flint and quartzite tools and flakes have been found in brick field (ss13704470) tillage field (ss13754440) and st helen's field (ss13804418) where it is thought that remains of hut circles were destroyed during ploughing. Five hundred flakes were collected from brick field in 1932 by dr dollar including cores, pygmy flakes, scrapers, etc. No contemporary pottery was found but several large upright stones were considered to be menhirs (nmr citing langham).

In 1957 more than 1000 flakes and cores were recovered from brick field by boys from devonport high school, including a micro-burin, microliths, a graver, scrapers and a high percentage of workers (nmr citing gardner).
