Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 95 by 35 metres in size, was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, on the south-east facing slopes east of Yankee Cottage, Awliscombe parish.
The western end of the visible earthwork corresponds with an Old Marl Pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, supporting the interpretation of the remains as a former extractive pit potentially of post-medieval origin that was abandoned by the late-19th century. The visible earthwork pit extends to the east for almost 60 metres beyond this depicted relict quarry, indicating that more than an earlier phase of extraction might be represented, one which had ended prior to circa 1840. Many marl pits on the Blackdown Hills are known to have been redundant by the time of the Tithe Survey.
