Foster, K. + Skinner, R., 01/2016, A30 to A303 Honiton to Devonshire Inn Improvement Scheme, Honiton, Devon (Report - Assessment). SDV359378.

DBA undertaken along a corridor associated with the A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. This study is intended to inform the development of options for improvements to the
A30/A303 between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.

Situated on the hillside to the south of Monkton is a field named on the Tithe Map Apportionment as ‘Blacklands’ (Figure 4, WA 139). This field name is often a reference to the colour of the soil and can indicate the presence of an archaeological settlement site with black soil reflecting settlement deposits or burning (Field, 1989, 22). The field named as ‘Blacklands’ is currently under arable cultivation and no earthworks were observed (Plate 9). It has been suggested that under pasture the field contained undulations and possible earthworks but no obvious sign of settlement.

As with much of the land along the Otter Valley the fields surrounding Monkton contain earthworks, banks and lynchets that reflect the former existence of medieval open fields. There is also likely that some of the parish’s farmsteads may originate in the medieval period.

Exeter Museums Archaeological Field Unit, 1992 - 1993, Blackdown Hills Survey Archive (Archive - Survey). SDV324187.

Vis=24/08/1992 (simpson and noble). This field is probably permenant pasture the central area may have been improved. There are some undulations and possible earthworks (banks) of former boundaries. No obvious sign of settlement.
