Old mess building. This is one of the few granite-built structures surviving at Merrivale Quarry.
Dartmoor National Park Authority, 2001, Merrivale Quarry: Historical Building Survey Report, 8-9 (Report - Survey). SDV347546.
Described as warming room and banker platform at Merrival Quarry. This one storey single cell granite building has a gabled roof of corrugated iron sheeting . At the south-west end is a curved drystone wall that runs for circa 30 metres south-west along the edge of the quarry complex. Inside is a small free-standing iron brazier so the building may have been used as a 'dry'. The building was probably constructed in the early 20th century. Other details: Plan 2, Photos 9-16.
Passmore, A. J., 2006, Archaeological Assesment of Historic Buildings at Merrivale Quarry, 6-7,9 (Report - Assessment). SDV347545.
The 'Crib' at Merrivale Quarry was constructed during the first half of the 20th century onto an earlier wide curving drystone wall. The eastern elevation is formed by the earlier wall of large granite stones overlain by smaller roughly squared blocks which are also used in the other elevations. The roof is a modern replacement in corrugated asbestos sheeting supported on wooden purlins. There is a door in the west elevation and a window in the south. The presence of a stove which appears to be associated with a chimneybreast and stack indicate the building was used as a crib or mess room. Other details: Figures 2,5.
Passmore, A. J., 2006, Archaeological Assessment and Recording of Historic Buildings at Merrivale Quarry, 7,-8 (Report - Watching Brief). SDV347587.
