A quarry of probable 19th century date is identifiable as an earthwork pit and mound on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019, on the north-east facing combe slopes under Walke Wood, Modbury.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the Modbury Tithe Map but does closely correspond with a pit depicted, under tree cover, on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map and annotated as ‘Old Quarry’.
This supports the interpretation that the pit is the remains of a former quarry, possibly of early to mid-19th century date that had ceased to be used prior to circa 1880.
