Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
Milestone marked as 12 miles to Plymouth and 10 miles to Totnes.

'Milestone' indicated on OS 6" (1906) and on OS 6" (1969).

Site visits 21st December 2005, October 2008 and 19th March 2012. Granite milestone on the south side of the road to the west of the turning to Higher Ludbrook erected circa 1759. The stone is inscribed '12/To/Plymo/10/To/totnes'. Stone in very poor condition having been cut in half by ditch clearing machine. Base still in bank and top half by roadside. Pieces no longer visible (2008). Last seen on site in 2012.
This highlights the dangers that face markers from contractors unaware of their presence and the need to keep them clear of vegetation.
