The visible earthworks correspond with a plot depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury as Plot 156, plantation. No quarry is depicted.

Irregularly shaped earthwork pits, hollows and mounds are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 as earthworks to the west of a track to the north-west of Brownston.
The pit to the west of the track corresponds closely with a ‘Quarry’ depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map. The quarry remains depicted, albeit with an extended pit, on the Ordnance Survey 25inch Second Edition map.
This supports the interpretation of the pit earthworks as a former quarry that was in active use from the late-19th into the early 20th century.
The Tithe Map and Apportionment for Modbury depicts and lists the plot as Plot 156, plantation. This might indicate that the quarry originated between circa 1840 and 1880.
Curvilinear hollows extending to the north-west of the pit are probably the remains of quarry tracks.
