Name:Phoenix Mill, Horrabridge

Summary

Phoenix mill was built in 1793, and was for a short time a paper mill. In the 20th century it was used as a corn store and flour mill, but the firm who occupied it in the mid 20th century had moved away by the late 1960s. The water wheel no longer remains, but the leat is still there. Building said to have been gutted by fire in the 1970s. Not clear whether any of the former buildings still remain.

Phoenix Mill depicted on the Tithe Map, 1 and 2 on the Walkhampton apportionment.

At the Phoenix Mill a bunt - or dressing-mill for getting rid of smut in corn is mentioned in 1819.

Phoenix Mill, near Horrabridge, operated as a paper mill between 1794 and 1795.

A fuller description of the 1819 machinery is given, it is described as nearly new.
