A former clay pit of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the south of Drake Farm, Yarcombe. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 106m in length by 65m in width. The visible earthwork is partly defined as an ‘Old Clay Pit’ on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the late 19th century. The Parish Tithe map mosaic of approximately 1838-48 is incomplete here, so it is not possible to determine whether the clay pit was extant by this time.
