Summary

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 and 1950, to the east of Bowhayes Farm, Culmstock. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1947, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been largely cleared, leaving a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.13 hectares of gentle northwest facing slope, within a single irregular shaped plot depicted on the First Edition OS map. The orchard occupies the site of a former extraction pit (MDV115621) which was likely established following the dis-use of the pit. The earthwork banks are, however, only visible off the outer southern edge of the extraction pit and not within it. The earthwork banks are not visible on aerial photographs after 1950 or digital images and their survival is uncertain.
