Summary

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the southwest of Bodmiscombe. These earthworks have previously been interpreted as cultivation marks, although this seems unlikely.

Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the southwest of Bodmiscombe. These earthworks have been previously interpreted as cultivation marks, although given that an orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, this seems unlikely. Aerial photographs of 1947 show that the orchard trees here have been partly thinned out, leaving a series of parallel northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy an area of approximately 0.55 hectares of gentle southwest facing slope.
