Summary

Linear and curvilinear ditches and banks were visible as earthworks on the south-east facing slopes south-east of Fair Oak Farm, Upottery parish. The visible earthworks fall within a field system that has been characterised by HLC as being probably of medieval origin. The earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery and are therefore interpreted as the remains of field boundaries of possible medieval date that were removed prior to the 1840s.
Within the earthwork complex, the relict ditched boundaries define a rectangular enclosure approximately 50 by 40 metres in size, possibly sub-divided into two smaller cells. The visible banked features are clustered around and within this smaller enclosed area. This is tentatively interpreted as evidence for a possible former farmstead or settlement.
