Timms, S. C., Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV2.

Signpost; at sourton cross the hatherleigh-tavistock road joined the okehampton road and between these two roads there is an old direction post. It is 17th century, roughly four sided with a slanting top. Upon the two opposite faces is the incised inscription ha/therly/road and ok/hamp/ton/road - only the ha is distinct (burd and/or masson-phillips). Vis=14/6/1978 (bridgwater). Only the word "road" on each side is now decipherable. Burd suggests a c18 date. Stone measured and sketched (worksheet). This stone is sited on a grass verge in the fork of the road between the a30 and the b3219. It should not be confused with the sourton memorial stone (sx59sw/5) which was reused as a route marker in c18 (timms).
