Name:Water Meadow at Peterhayes Farm

Summary

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, at Peterhayes Farm. The earthwork ditches remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.

A possible water meadow system of probable 19th century date is visible as a series of earthwork ditches on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, at Peterhayes Farm. The possible system occupies an area of approximately 7.23 hectares and is typified by a series of sinuous north to south and northeast to southwest aligned earthwork ditches with a series of more linear east to west aligned ditches bisecting these. These more linear ditches may have served to feed the system by diverting the flow of water from a watercourse further uphill to the southwest. It is largely unclear, however, how this water meadow system may have operated, although the less typical arrangement of these gutters were presumably designed to take advantage of the subtle variations in the micro-topography of the landscape here and appears to represent a hybrid local style of water management, rather than a more conventional type. The earthwork ditches remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. It should be borne in mind that some of the earthworks recorded here within this record may have served as simple land drainage ditches and are not associated with the possible water meadow system.
