Summary

A hut circle probably of Bronze Age date is recorded from field investigation and aerial survey on the north-west facing slopes of Shaugh Moor. It is one of two located within a pentagonal enclosure. The hut circle is identifiable as a ruined structure and earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards, digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016 and visualisations derived from low resolution lidar data captured in 2013.

Its walling which as been damaged especially in the south-west quadrant survives as an 0.5m high stone and boulder core with some large inner and outer facing slabs/boulders in situ. The entrance is located in the south-west side.

A bank up to circa 3m wide is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 and 1964 as an earthwork under scrub vegetation, enclosing a roughly rectilinear hollow or terrace up to circa 7m across, within a larger enclosure on the west-facing slopes of Shaugh Moor. Linear arrangements of stones are visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016 set into two opposing sections of the bank.
The bank and stones are interpreted as the ruinous remains of a hut circle of probable Bronze Age date. A break in the south-west corner of the bank might be evidence of an entrance into the structure.
A second probable hut circle is visible as a more subtle earthwork immediately to the south-east.
