The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century, were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the south-east facing slopes of a combe to the north and east of Lake Farm, Stockland.
The banks extended over a small area of approximately 0.25 hectares and were spaced up to approximately 5 metres apart. They were aligned obliquely to the contours, presumably to aid drainage towards a stream to the east. They correspond to an area depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Stockland and the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage.
The orchard had been cleared of trees by 1947 revealing the underlying earthwork banks. By 1996 this area had been encroached upon by expansion of farmyard hardstanding, and might have been partly levelled. The remaining banks were obscured by scrub vegetation on more recent images available to the survey but could survive as earthworks.
