Summary

Duck decoy on original channel of Braunton Pill to west of Wrafton, shown on late 19th and early 20th century maps. Created in the middle of the 19th century after Braunton Pill was straightened during reclamation of the marshes.

Duckponds now found on the site of the original Braunton Pill. The reed beds found here are also believed to have been harvested for thatching, demonstrating economic diversification enabled by straightening of the estuary channel. This was completed in 1857 along with the reclamation of the marshes. Other details: Photograph.
