Irregularly shaped pits from circa 8m to 55m across are identifiable as earthworks under dense tree cover on the south-east facing slopes and valley floor of the Tory Brook combe, on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
One of the visible earthworks, centred at circa SX55235823, corresponds with an ‘Old Quarry’ depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. The pits are therefore likely to predate circa 1880. This feature remains depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base layer. The remainder of the visible earthworks are not depicted. It is probable that they are the remains of small quarries or extractive pits that predate the creation of the deer park and its associated plantations in 1700.
