A roughly triangular mound circa 80m by 60m in size is visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthwork closely corresponds with a triangular plot depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map as a plantation.
Two or three pits are visible cut into the western edge of the mound and a fourth is visible on the eastern corner of the mound.
Two of the pits correspond closely with quarries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map, labelled as ‘old quarries’ on the Second Edition map of the early 20th century.
The pits are interpreted as extractive pits or small quarries of probable 19th century date, one of which had probably passed out of use prior to the late 19th century and two or three that became disused by the early 20th century.
The mound into which they were cut is probably natural in origin, but further investigation is recommended.
