Name:Hut circle B in enclosure south of Foggintor Quarries, Walkhampton

Summary

Hut was excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in the late 19th century. Hut measures 4.9 metres in diameter. Single orthostat and rubble wall 1.7 metres wide, 0.6 metres high. A 180 degree facing gap may represent a doorway. Rubble walls leading away to the east from the exterior wall of the hut measure 0.8 metres wide and up to 0.2 metres may be the result of robbing or other interference. Animal burrowing in western part of the hut noted in 2000. Low grass.

Full description

Baring Gould, S., 1898, Fifth Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee, 103 (Article in Serial). SDV337066.

Hut 6 was excavated by the Committee. The floor near the entrance was paved. There was a cooking hole in the north-eastern portion of the circle, which was 0.27 metres deep and 0.22 metres in diameter. Finds included charcoal, one cooking stone, a crystal of quartz and some fragments of pottery.

(25/8/1950) One of a group of 17 hut circles, given the letter 'B'. Double walled type, diameter 6.5 metres, wall width 1.5 metres, height 0.5 metres, composed of turf-covered stones. Condition fairly good. There are two possible entrances, one on south side and one on east side.

Stone hut circle forming part of a partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement at Yes Tor Bottom, 1120 metres east-north-east of Criptor.
