A rectilinear shaped enclosure of between medieval to 19th century date is visible as earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, on Black Down Common, Culmstock. The partial enclosure measures approximately 75m in length by 37m in width, with sides visible to the east and west and also partly to the north. The function of the enclosure is uncertain, although may define the site of a former dwelling or stock enclosure. Faint traces of an additional bank of a former field boundary are visible off the southeast corner of the enclosure. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century, suggesting the enclosure and field boundary had passed out of use by this time.
