Name: | Extractive pit, northeast of Goodall’s Farm, Hemyock |
---|
Summary
A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, on east facing slope to the northeast of Goodall’s Farm, Hemyock. The earthwork has been previously interpreted as a possible ring cairn, although this seems unlikely.

A possible former extractive pit of post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, on east facing slope to the northeast of Goodall’s Farm, Hemyock. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 40m in length by 28m in width. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the available 19th century mapping. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. The earthwork has been previously interpreted as a possible ring cairn, although this is highly unlikely given that it is clearly visible as a cut feature on aerial photographs and given the number of other extractive pits recorded in close proximity here.
