A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as a v-shaped shaped earthwork and cropmark approximately 30 metres across, on the south-east-facing slopes west of Tanahlot Farm, Luppitt parish.
The visible earthwork did not correspond precisely with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery. This might support the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century. A former clay pit is depicted and annotated on the OS First Edition map (and therefore not transcribed by the survey) approximately 70 metres to the south-east and a similar function is therefore likely for the pit recorded here.
It is possible that if not viewed stereoscopically, the small area of ground enclosed by the arms of the v-shaped pit could be mistaken for a mound, leading to the former interpretation in this location.
The pit was not visible as an earthwork or cropmark on more recent images available to the survey and might have been levelled.
