Full description

National Trust, 1984, Knightshayes Court, Devon, 7 (Report - Survey). SDV341846.

The names 'Blackery' are difficult to analyse because of a variety of possible interpretations. One is that the soil was naturally very dark, unlikely in this area; the second suggestion is that the land was enriched by burning, and the final possibility is that the name 'Blackery' derives from the Old Scandinavian 'bla - kiarr, meaning 'dark marsh'. Since the fields are designated arable, perhaps the second interpretation is more likely.

Yendall, J., 1993, Flint Scatter (Worksheet). SDV341970.

Field walked on 07/02/1993. Five flints were found: 2 burnt, 1 possibly a core; 1 small scraper; 1 large flake of Beer-type black; 1 small fawn fragment. Soil varied from very red in south-west corner to a general brown, with a small black area to north-west. This comes partly within an area called 'Blackery' on the Tithe Map of 1842 Other details: Plan.
