Remains of prehistoric cairn between the Devonport Leat and River Meavy, beside small stream. Considered for scheduling in 1993 but not recommended owing to poor survival. Previously identified as a cairn.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, Untitled Source (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV24.

Vis=3/7/1980 (os) a hut circle rather than a cairn is mainly obscured by a felled conifer and situated on a southeastern slope near a valley bottom.(identification of cairn may have originated with h. Breton, see sx57se4).

Vis=25/6/1980 (os) no trace of cairn at place indicated by breton. Site now afforested but with no sign of stone clearance in the vicinity and it may be that he was referring to the hut circle 40m to n (nmr, citing os).

Vis=3/7/1980 (os) at sx56927029, a felled conifer currently obscures much of what appears t be a hut circle. Identification as a cairn may have originated with breton (see osa sx57se4).

Apparently type 1, with levelled interior 3.5m in diam and rubble walling 1.1m wide, with a few upright slabs on the inner face. Externally the hut is 0.3m high on upper side, 0.6m on lower. No entrance visible. Probably part of a settlement, now much despoiled, of which other elements occur to sw + w (nmr, citing os).

Vis=21/11/1950 (os) remains of stone circle, containing cairn. Nothing visible. In forestry commission property. The above site estimated at ngr sx56907025 by breton in 1950 - no evidence found by os surveyor in 1950 (osa, sx57se4).
