An earthwork pit of a possible post-medieval to 19th century extraction pit or Roman ironstone mine is visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, within Black Down. The sub-circular shaped earthwork measures approximately 30m in diameter. Whilst it is located in the immediate vicinity of Roman ironstone mines, it is considerably larger and better defined, perhaps suggesting therefore that it is more likely to represent a post-medieval to 19th century extraction pit. There was no clear evidence for the purported cairn alluded to elsewhere in this record, although the Historic England AMIE record has suggested the tumulus was possibly destroyed by quarrying before the middle of the 19th century.
