Two shallow pits were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as earthworks on the east-facing slopes of Hartridge, north of Beacon, Luppitt parish. The earthworks are circa 150 to 170 metres long and up to 50 metres wide. The lower of the two appears to cut the higher at the northern end. Both cut areas have an uneven and lightly pitted appearance of rough ground and are crossed by a linear boundary of probable 19th century date. The pits are interpreted as possible areas of open cast extraction of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The earthworks are obscured by dense plantation tree cover on the most recent images available to the survey.
