Name:Hut Circle '27a' at Watern Oke settlement, Dartmoor Forest

Summary

Hut Circle '27a' consists of a pair of conjoined huts with the northern hut of 3.5 metres diameter with walls 0.9 metres wide by up to 0.3 metrs high and the southern hut of 4 metres diameter with walls 1.8 metres wide by up to 1.2 metres high at Watern Oke settlement. A boundary wall leads north-east from the northern structure. Excavations in 1905, within the southern building, revealed a fire-place along the northern wall, quartz, pieces of spar, small cooking stones, and 'rubbers'. The northern building has not previously been recorded.

Anderson, I. K., 1906, 11th Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee, 101-113 (Article in Serial). SDV337055.

One of a group of about 94 hut circles at Watern Oke. Hut 27a (internal diameter 3.66m) is well shaped; probable entrance on south, a large fireplace was at the north. Not paved; quartz, pieces of spar, small cooking stones and rubbers were found.

(1992) SX 56458350 Hut circle terraced into the hillslope. Includes two conjoined hut circles and is composed of coursed stone walls. Interior of northern structure measures 3.5m in diameter and is defined by a 0.9m wide wall standing up to 0.3m high. The second structure measures 4m in diameter and is defined by a 1.8m wide wall standing up to 1.2m high. The doorway faces south-east and is blocked. A boundary wall leads north-east from the northern structure. Excavations by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1905, within the southern building, revealed a fire-place along the northern wall, quartz, pieces of spar, small cooking stones, and 'rubbers'. The northern building has not previously been recorded.

Two conjoined hut circles at 'Watern Oke West settlement'. The northern hut are the slight remains of Hut '4' and a boundary runs north-east from this hut.
