Full description

Lowe, M. C., 1992, Toll houses of the Exeter Turnpike Trust, 89-90 (Article in Serial). SDV40109.

New toll house at Bow. In 1763 the Exeter Turnpike trustees ordered that "the turnpike gates at Bow be removed from thence to the easternmost house in Bow town" (see PRN 50518). In 1764 a committee was established "to get a toll house built at the Turnpike Gate at Bow Cross". Builders were paid in 1765 for building a tollhouse "near Bow". The Turnpike Gate was let in 1769. By 1803 there is no mention of Bow in the toll auction lists. Probably superseded by Barnstaple Cross Gate (see PRN 13975).
