HER Number:MDV50623
Name:Medieval or later enclosure in Legistor Warren

Summary

Enclosure containing a pillow mound and vermin trap. Forms part of Legis Tor Warren. The enclosure itself was constructed during the Bronze Age but the existing boundary walls appear to have been repaired in the Medieval or later period to prevent rabbits moving into other areas of the warren and to prevent vermin gaining access. For these reasons this re-used enclosure may have been a breeding area in which rabbits were raised for the purpose of stocking the outlying mounds.

Full description

(22/02/1993) Enclosure containing pillow mound and vermin trap. Forms part of Legis Tor Warren. The enclosure itself was constructed during the Bronze Age and forms part of the prehistoric settlement within this area. However, during the Medieval and/or post-Medieval periods a pillow mound and vermin trap were built within the earlier enclosure, and it is likely that the existing boundary walls were repaired at this time to prevent rabbits moving into other areas of the warren and to prevent vermin gaining access. For these reasons this re-used enclosure may have been a breeding area in which rabbits were raised for the purpose of stocking the outlying mounds.
The pillow mound and vermin trap are described separately; see associated records.
