Name:Hut within enclosure south-west of Legis Tor, Sheepstor

Summary

This hut measures 5.5 metres in diameter (internal) with walls 2.0 metres wide and 0.7 metres high. Possibly excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1895 (2005 survey). Gerrard (1993) records a doorway facing south-east and partly blocked with loose rubble. This structure is attached to a short length of boundary bank which partly sub-divides one of the enclosures within an agglomerate enclosure.

22/02/1993 (SX 56986528) Hut circle terraced into the hillslope, and of the simple plan and coursed walling type. Interior measures 6m in diameter and is defined by a 1.8m wide wall standing up to 0.8m high. The doorway faces south-east and is partly blocked with loose rubble. This structure is attached to a short length of boundary bank which partly sub-divides one of the enclosures within an agglomerate enclosure.
Excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1895, and this work revealed flint flakes and a cooking hole filled with ash and pottery sherds.

Hut Circle '5' of 5.2 metres diameter is connected by walling to its neighbour to the west within the main enclosure of Settlement 'A' at Legis Tor. Excavation in 1895-6 produced worked flint and pottery from the floor and a cooking pit.

(15/02/2005) One of 13 hut circles within a field system on the lower south and south-west flanks of Legis Tor. All but one of the huts are contained within five irregular, adjoining enclosures to the south of the settlement. The hut circles are largely integral with the enclosure banks though several are free-standing. All the huts have level interiors unless otherwise stated. Few display obvious entrances.
