Summary

Leat survives as a 1.5 metres wide by 0.2 metres deep linear hollow running for 200 metres through the settlement before continuing on towards area of streamworking on the Ranny Brook.

Full description

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 133101 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

Visited on 11th March 1993. Leat running from SX61946358 to SX62116354. A 200 metres length cuts through hut settlement. Leat survives as a linear hollow measuring 1.5 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep and material upcast during he construction survives as a 1.7 metres wide and 0.3 metres high bank. Cuts through the agglomerate enclosure boundary bank and stone hut circles. Probably cut to carry water from the River Yealm to a streamworks situated 270 metres east of the settlement.

This monument includes a large prehistoric stone hut circle settlement, three enclosures, a contemporary field system, two post-medieval buildings and two lengths of leat, lying on a south-facing slope overlooking the valley of the River Yealm. Two leats cut through the agglomerate enclosure and some of the huts. The southern leat survives as a linear hollow measuring 1.5 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep and the associated bank is 1.7 etresm wide and 0.3 metres high. Both leats were probably cut to carry water from the River Yealm to a tin streamwork situated 270 metres east of the settlement.
