Eastern Shaft was one of the three main shafts at Wheal Fanny & is shown on the 19C maps. The 1848 map labels the area to the east of the shaft 'Water Wheel'. From 1915 to 1925 Eastern Shaft was the main shaft used to access the arsenical sulphides & a narrow guage incline railway was constructed from the 1920s arsenic works (see PRN 3865). The survey found the shaft was identified by a granite marker post in a depression 3.6m x 3.6m with a surrounding wall 1m high. A stone lined blocked tunnel 1.6m wide by 2.2m high was located on the western side of the shaft. The capstan or whim located 5m to the east of the shaft was represented by a 4m circular depression with a 4m long x 1m deep depression connecting to the shaft. Vertical timbers to the east at SX42287368 appear to have carried a launder from a leat (see PRN 56111) to the north with three sections of 5m long tramrail to the east. An adit 0.7m wide x 1.2m high at SX42287369 is labelled on the 1867 map & may have provided water for the wheel pit just below the opening. Other details: Sites 83, 84 & 85.

Conservation works are planned as part of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project. These include repair to a small tunnel accessing Eastern Shaft at Wheal Fanny mine, and conservation works to the adjacent capstan, to aid public interpretaion. The revetment/retaining facing stone wall either side of the western shaft tunnel has fallen away and should be replaced with similar stone to the same angle of repose. In addition, some of the facing stones of the water tunnel portal have also come away and will need to be replaced. If possible the well defined capstan, sited to the east of the shaft, should be hand excavated to reveal any masonry sides. Other details: Figure 4, site 83; photograph figure 2a.
