Engine Shaft. Part of Wheal Anna Maria, Devon Great Consols. Drained by waterwheel and connected flatrods (see PRN 56089).

Buck, C., 2002, Devon Great Consols: Archaeological Assessment, 110-111+Figs 15,38 (Report - Assessment). SDV241758.

Engine Shaft was one of the two main shafts at Wheal Anna Maria mine on the Main Lode. The shafts were pumped by flat rods (see PRN 56089) powered by a large waterwheel named 'Anna Maria' (see PRN 56088). The 1867 map details the balance bob box & mountings to the northwest, the angle bob box next to the shaft to the southeast & the capstan to the north. The survey found the shaft 4m long x 3m wide marked by a granite stone at the southeastern end of a depression 20m long x 5m wide. A depression 2m diameter x 0.4m deep at SX42687365 may be the site of a shaft recently identified. Other details: Sites 141 & 143.
