Hitchins Engine Shaft is shown on 19C maps & was one of the earliest at Wheal Josiah mine. Tha capstan was on the north side of the shaft. The survey found a curvilinear depression 7m x 5m x 1.5m deep at the site of the shaft with a depression to the north 3m diameter x 0.5m deep which was probably the site of the capstan.
