'Burying Ground' shown to rear of St Edmund's Church.


Born, A. + Tanner, K., 1986, Untitled Source, 10 (Monograph). SDV337657.

A petition by parishioners in 1309 requested the right to bury their dead in their own churchyard to avoid climbing 'up the high mountain' to Churchstow, the mother church. According to their testimony, St. Edmund's dated back to at least 1250, when the citizens of the 'new borough' may have built or rebuilt their church.
