Name:Crowndale Cottages, Crowndale

Summary

Crowndale Cottages built by the Bedford Estate around 1880 are shown on the late 19th century map as four small cottages later becoming three dwellings. It is possible that they may be a conversion of the early 19th century Crowndale tin smelting house and adjoining cottage.

Crowndale Smelting House - Tavistock Smelting Company; Devon Tin Smelting Company
Documentary evidence for this short-lived smelting house is hard to find. Appears to have been set up as early as 1819 (perhaps by 1810) on or adjoining the sett of Crowndale Mine. The smelter appears to have been given up by the Devon Tin Smelting Company in 1843 and was certainly out of use by 1846. The house must have been sited near the only leat leading to the mine, but there is no mapped evidence. It is possible that Crowndale Cottages, built by the Bedford Estate around 1880 are a conversion of the smelting house and adjoining cottage (fig 8.49).
