Just to south of junction of New Road and Mill Street is a toll house. The gate was at the entrance of Alswear New Road.

Rosevear, A., 2008, Devon Tollhouses, DV. SMO05 (Un-published). SDV351734.

The main part of the building is thought to have been built in the 19th century for the South Molton Turnpike Trust. It takes the form of a lodge house with a protruding front. A rectangular, two storey building, with rendered walls and arch-headed windows, under a gabled, slate roof.
It is thought that it replaced the toll house at Crooks Cross when the new turnpike road was built in the 19th century.
