The Duke of Somerset apparently sold land for a branch line from Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead on the condition that the train would stop at Teigngrace whenever he wished to travel on it. A basic station and platform were built. There was a driveway from opposite the approach road to Stover House. The line opened in 1866.
The station was closed during the First World War, from 1917 to 1919, as an economy measure, after which it became a halt.
