Name:Holed stone used as sluices on leat on Hickaton Hill

Summary

Two dressed stones which were used to regulate the flow of the leat running from Brockhill Mires. They are probably of 19th century date. One is in situ on the lower side of the leat and measures 1.2 m by 0.25 m by at least 0.6 m high, and has a square opening, 0.4 m by at least 0.25m high, in the middle of the lower side. The other at SX 68796737 stands upright, but apparently away from the leat. It measures, 1.4m by 0.25m by at least 0.5 m high, with a square opening, 0.3m by at least 0.1 m high, in the middle of the lower edge.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1977, SX66NE9 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV147259.

(SX 68246733, 68806738) Two stones with square holes once used as sluices (citing Worth, R. H., 10/12/1948).
(20/07/1977) These two dressed stones were used to regulate the flow of the leat which runs from Brockhill Mires, and are probably of 19th century date.
'A' SX 68236733. This stone stands in situ on the lower side of the leat, measures 1.2 m by 0.25 m by at least 0.6 m high, and has a square opening, 0.4 m by at least 0.25m high, in the middle of the lower side.
