Walkover survey identified a rectilinear platform or terrace corresponding with the site of the sawmill. The main sawmill building, as recorded on the 2nd Edition OS 25” map survives, but none of the ancillary structures are present. The building is single storeyed, and constructed of local Candy brick, with windows in the east and north elevations, and doors in the south and east elevations. The roof is finished with slates, supported on tie-beam trusses with diagonal struts. The building is in a poor condition; part of the east elevation has collapsed, as has two-thirds of the roof, the remains of which have been removed. The southeast corner is in danger of imminent collapse, taking much of the south elevation with it.
A full historic building record of the sawmill should be made before the structure collapses. The building is probably too uneconomic to repair, but if its repair and reuse is feasible, it would provide a useful base for activities/interpretation within the woodland. If full restoration is not possible, then consolidation and reuse in a ruinous state (with some limited demolition to make the building safe) would be preferable to the building deteriorating further. Its location, including close to the Canadian Forestry Memorial, could provide a catalyst for interpretation of forestry at Stover.
