Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950/1977, SX66NE14 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV146080.

(04/05/1950) One of two cairns; a turf-covered ring cairn with a very slight mound in centre measuring 17.6 meters in diameter, height 0.3 meters.
(01/07/1977) Two cairns on the broad summit of Gripper's Hill at 335 m above OD. Cairn 'B' at SX 68596551. This cairn, 16.8 metres overall diameter and 0.4 metres high, is constructed of small boulders and consists of a central platform 13.6 metres diameter and 0.2 metres high with a perimeter rim, average width 1.9 metres, height 0.4 metres. The rim has an east facing gap, 1.5 metres wide. There is a slight central rise, about 0.1 metres above the surrounding platform. 1:10 000 Survey revised on PFD.

A9. Ring cairn on Gripper’s Hill; stone ring 14.0 metres in diameter internally, with bank 1.2 meters wide and 0.3 meters high.

Gripper's Hill summit cairn '2' at SX68586550. The western cairn on the summit of Gripper's Hill of 19 metres diameter by 0.3 metres high is possibly a ring cairn. A well defined outer bank surrounds a slightly raised interior, obviously dug into around the low mound at the centre.

This site was considered for designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument during the Monument Protection Programme. The programme ended before the entire list of sites was successfully scheduled so this is included on a local list of Nationally Important Sites.
